Roberts Environmental Soil Resource Surveys
Our Soil Resource Assessment provides reliable insight into what your site’s soils can support, helping to ensure successful habitat creation and strong BNG outcomes. Through targeted intrusive surveys and accredited laboratory testing for soil nutrients, we build a clear picture of soil fertility and suitability.
01. Why test soils for habitat creation?
Establishing high-quality habitats for Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) starts with understanding the soil that will support them. Soil composition, nutrient availability, structure and organic content all influence which habitats can thrive and which may struggle. By assessing the baseline soil conditions early, we help ensure that habitat creation proposals are both achievable and sustainable, reducing the risk of failure.
02. Intrusive survey works
Our soil resource assessments begin with intrusive investigations across the site. Using hand augering and trial pits, we collect representative topsoil samples and assess in situ characteristics such as texture, structure, compaction.
03. Laboratory Soil Testing
Each soil sample is analysed in an accredited laboratory to quantify key parameters that influence habitat establishment and management. Standard testing includes:
- Phosphorus (P)
- Potassium (K)
- Magnesium (Mg)
- Nitrogen (N)
- pH
- Soil Organic Matter Content
These metrics provide an evidence based understanding of soil fertility, acidity/alkalinity, and overall suitability for specific habitat types, from species rich grasslands to wetland systems.
04. Reporting and habitat suitability recommendations
Following analysis, we deliver a clear and practical report that interprets the survey findings in the context of habitat creation for BNG. The report outlines:
- Which habitat types the soils are capable of supporting;
- Any limiting factors that may inhibit establishment;
- Recommended soil management or amendments for successful creation;
- Guidance for future site monitoring.
