Roberts Environmental Concrete Coring & Floor Slab Assessment
Our concrete coring and floor slab assessment provides a comprehensive “health check” for industrial and commercial floors. By taking physical samples and testing the ground beneath, we verify the thickness, strength, and load-bearing capacity of your building’s foundation, giving you the technical certainty needed to safely repurpose or upgrade your facility.
01. Structural Slab & Sub-Grade Information
The repurposing of commercial/industrial premises may require an understanding of structural capability before a change in occupational use. If there is an absence of information relating to the construction and make-up of a floor slab or a requirement to check slab integrity against initial specifications, it may be necessary to undertake intrusive inspection of the slab.
02. Typical Investigation Methods
Our investigations would seek to understand slab thickness, aggregate composition, carbonation status, reinforcement status and the strength and stiffness of the underlying sub-grade.
REL have the in-house capability to undertake concrete coring to a maximum diameter of 350 mm. Once a concrete core is recovered to a required diameter, the sample can be visually inspected, logged and submitted to a certified geotechnical laboratory for strength testing. Chemical tests to determine carbonation status can also be undertaken.
03. Linking with other Ground Investigation Services
If additional information is required on the sub-grade beneath the slab, such as Deformation Modulus, Modulus of Subgrade Reaction, Surface Modulus or equivalent CBR, REL can utilise in-situ testing techniques such as Lightweight Deflectometer or more traditional plate load tests to obtain this information.
The added benefit of having a wide-diameter coring offering is the facilitation of other drilling methods. If follow-on ground investigation is needed, dynamic sampler, cable percussive or rotary techniques can be advanced through a wide diameter core to achieve any additional geotechnical aims for a given project.
04. Technical but Commercially Aware Outcomes
REL is an experienced geotechnical consulting practice. We pride ourselves on offering detailed, technical advice to achieve the necessary project outcomes. Commercial realism and pragmatism always underpin this advice to ensure cost-effective and realistic outcomes.
Separate ground investigation instructions simply are not required. REL can offer the necessary on-site ground investigation ability and expertise to obtain the necessary geotechnical data, whilst also being able to offer interpretative technical consultancy advice, bridging the gap between geotechnical and structural engineering expertise.
